Club History - Foreword
| Izaak Walton (1593 - 1683) is best known for his book "The Compleat Angler", but he also played bowls. He Wrote; |
"bowling is a game which is played on the sward in God's fresh air, and it amuseth me greatly that I can judge of man's characters after a manner by the way they play bowls. There is a Master Impetuous who always sends his bowl rolling away at speed past the Jack. He is too fast for the world, and would be for doing something most wonderful if his haste did not stand as an impediment to him. |
There is a Master Cautious - he instead of going past the mark has not the courage to bowl up to it. |
Then there is the Master Careless who throws at random and if he wins a game it is only by spoiling someone's more skilfully played bowls. |
There is Master Good Judgement, who by the skilful placement never fails in the long run to gain his end in bowls, as he does with the blessing of Providence, on most of his worldly undertakings". |
